The Healer

Prologue
The wind howled, bringing with each gust a fresh spray of rain. Mixed with the salty sea water, it splashed onto the deck of the swaying ship. In the distance, a bolt of lightning tore through the night sky—the storm was retreating. Amidst the crashing waves and howling wind, screams, furious shouts, and the clash of weapons could be heard.
Toren clung to the railing, backing toward the bow. He was limping. Blood trickled down his calf from a nasty gash. Around him, a fierce battle raged. It was clear that the pirates had the upper hand, taking advantage of the element of surprise, but the captain’s men fought bravely.
Before him, a man wielding a short, curved saber appeared, moving toward him with dangerous intent. His wet, scarred face twisted into a wicked grin, hunger for blood gleaming in his eyes. The closer he got, the more he bared his rotten, decayed teeth.
On the mast behind the pirate, an eagle sat, watching Toren intently with its radiant golden eyes. What was it doing there? Despite his fear, the boy could sense the bird’s presence, as if it were trying to tell him something.
The pirate let out a menacing laugh and lunged. He struck forward, but the boy swiftly dodged and leaped back. A sharp pain shot through his injured leg. The pirate had him trapped at the bow—there was no escape. Behind him, only the railing and the vast, raging sea. The man sneered again and spat on the deck.
Toren realized this was the end. The next strike would not miss.
Then, suddenly, he heard a voice. It took him a moment to understand that the voice was inside his mind.
One word.
"Jump!"
The eagle. It was the eagle, Toren realized.
"Jump!" the voice urged again.
The pirate roared and lunged.
And then—
Toren woke with a start, sitting up abruptly. He was in his bed, the fire in the hearth still smoldering, the night stretching on beyond the window. He lay back down. Within minutes, he was peacefully asleep once more.

Entering the world of Sirana is like opening the door to a realm scented with magic, old legends, and restless anticipation. In the very first volume of the series, L. J. Rivero shows she’s not afraid to stand alongside the great names of fantasy—while still remaining fresh, approachable, and understandable even for younger readers.
The main hero, Toren, first appears to be an ordinary boy, but in his hands lies a power capable of changing lives. The author doesn’t use this premise merely for flashy spells, but also to ask what it truly means to possess a gift that can be both a salvation and a curse. Sirana is not a pretty world of neatly assigned roles of good and evil—it is a land where heroes stumble, where magic has a price, and where every decision carries consequences.
Rivero writes with energy and a fine sense of suspense. She knows how to paint a setting where the reader can feel the chill of mountain passes and the heat of dragon wings, while structuring the story so it compels you to read one chapter after another. I was surprised that, even though the book is also aimed at younger readers, the dialogues don’t feel naïve and the characters’ motivations have real depth.
If you’re looking for a story that can captivate you the way Eragon or Percy Jackson once did, then The Healer is the perfect gateway. And if you’re already well-versed in fantasy, you’ll still find here honesty, imagination, and heart—qualities that don’t get lost even when compared with the heavierweights of the genre.
Verdict: The Saga of Sirana: The Healer is a story about discovering oneself, about the cost of power, and about the truth that heroism is not defined by magic, but by courage. And best of all—it’s only the beginning.
